April 2000: Mayor Anthony M. Masiello, accompanied by Streets Commissioner Paul Sullivan, has announced the Spring-Summer Neighborhood Business District Clean Up plan. Using the corner of Grant and Ferry Streets as the backdrop, the Mayor described the deployment of manpower and equipment for flushing and mechanically sweeping various business arteries throughout the City of Buffalo. The plan also calls for the assignment of laborers who are equipped with brooms, shovels and push buggies.
"One of the main priorities of my administration is to make Buffalo a cleaner place in which to live, work, and enjoy ourselves," stated Mayor Masiello. "In fact, I have adopted the theme of 'Clean and Green' as our commitment to making the city cleaner."
Commissioner Sullivan stated that the Grant-Ferry Business District is just one of several areas of the city targeted for this initiative. Sullivan also noted that the assignment of laborers and buggies to the business districts would add a more personal interaction between the business owners and the city. Sweepers and flushers will operate between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., with laborers working between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.
"If everyone cooperates in this effort, we can reestablish a sense of pride in all of our communities," Concluded the Mayor.
